Wireless Coverage for Super Bowl XLII Provided by CSI

This Sunday, when the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona hosts Super Bowl XLII, a state-of-the-art in-building DAS (Distributed Antenna System) designed, installed and commissioned by CSI (Cellular Specialties, Inc.) of Manchester, New Hampshire will carry massive amounts of real-time voice and data traffic.
The traffic will be generated by 73,000 fans, 3,500 U.S.-based reporters, 500 international reporters, and hundreds of team, league and security personnel using cell phones, PDAs, WiFi-equipped notebook PCs and radios. They will rely on the network as they file stories with media outlets, keep statistics current, ensure that stadium guests are safe, or send photos or videos to friends thousands of miles away.
“Wireless technology has become a must-have for sports venues on an operational level, and is changing the way spectators experience live entertainment”, said Kelley Carr, vice president of Service for the Custom Solutions Group of CSI. The facility-wide wireless voice and data solution at University of Phoenix stadium will significantly improve communication for stadium and public safety personnel as well as provide a more exciting fan experience.
Designed as a wire it once architecture, the stadium’s DAS is scalable, flexible and uses a hybrid architecture that combines the low-loss attributes of fiber optics with the broadband flexibility of coaxial cable.
As a systems integrator, CSI does not use proprietary technology, which enables the solution to provide optimal service today and in the future, broadening the services the stadium can provide to its guests. Alltel, Sprint/Nextel, Cingular/AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile all benefit from the DAS, which covers over 1,000,000 square feet using five miles of cabling and 200 antennas.
