In-Line Tower Top Amplifier
Cell site coverage is characteristically limited by the uplink power capability of the mobile phone. Mobile phones are limited in power and extended coverage can only be obtained by improving the sensitivity of the cell site. CSI developed the In-Line Tower Top Amplifier (ITA) to serve this purpose. The ITA is installed by removing the lead-in coax from the antenna and then connecting the unit to the antenna with a short jumper cable. The ITA passes the downlink signal through to the antenna but separates the received uplink signal, amplifies it with a low noise amplifier and sends it down the coax to the base station receivers. In this way, maximum signal-to-noise ratio is established prior to noise contributions by the lead-in coax and other base station equipment. Power for the amplifier is sent up the lead-in coax and the amplifiers automatically transition to a 'bypass' mode if power is lost.
